Dozens of pristine Ice Age lakes are found in the Retezat Mountains (southwestern Transylvania). The Orastie Mountains (southwestern Transylvania) are the site of fascinating late Iron-Age fortresses, built to defend the Dacian people from Romans. One of them is the site of the last stand of Dacian ruler Decebal, who chose suicide over slavery in A.D. 106.

Finally, Omul Mountain (Bucegi Mountains, south central Romania) is believed by some to be an “Axis Mundi,” or “Axle” or “Hub” of the world. The 8,220-foot mountain is the highest peak of the Bucegi Mountain chain, one of the four forming the Southern Carpathians or Transylvanian Alps.

Take caution as you explore Transylvania's mountains; you may encounter Eurasian lynxes, Carpathian bears and wolves, and Ural owls, among the country's other nocturnal creatures.
